A Practical Guide to SelfHypnosis Melvin Powers 9781444458220 Books

This book is more about how the author learned about and worked with self-hypnosis. It doesn't actually have well planned out steps to hypnotise yourself. It has a quick "how do ya do?" and then it goes back to the side-effects, the history of self-hypnosis, how they came to love hypnosis-I was looking for a step by step book on how to hypnotise yourself. This book didn't meet my standards. If you want a book on the history of hypnotising, or what happens when you do it wrong, or how a random author came to love hypnosis, heres a book for you!

A Practical Guide to SelfHypnosis Melvin Powers 9781444458220 Books Reviews

Straight and to the point, which is what the title says. A very good book even if it was written over 50 years ago. I'm sure that some of the content may seem dated but over all its still well worth reading.
Describes plenty of techniques starting from the very beginning to the utmost deepest possible level.
It does go into some chatty chapters, but, for the ones that need that extra words maybe is good...
This is an instructional book about self hypnosis. I recommend it for those who want to learn this form of therapy on there own time. The book also dispels any fears of being hypnotized.
This is an easy and fast read. I have read many books on hypnosis, some by authors mentioned here. Powers provided answers to questions others couldn't/wouldn't. Great information for hypnosis, not just self-hypnosis.
A Practical Guide to Self-Hypnosis by Melvin Powers used to be one of the most sought after books by those wishing to know more about the topic.

I downloaded this book while doing research for a book I am writing with elements of the same topic. While some of my knowledge was validated in this book, it didn’t offer me anything I didn’t know. Not enough was mentioned about the process itself. Better explanatory examples should have been given for various inductions and also how to leave the hypnotic state.

A lot of information is available about hypnosis today, much more than when this book was written. Melvin Powers used to be one of the most influential people regarding hypnosis. If this book was to be republished, it would have been wise to update much of the information or at least include discussions of how hypnotism has changed or been accepted or rejected, through the years. This is a book for beginners curious about hypnosis, but still, the vast knowledge of this subject has changed and more upgraded information can be found.
The content is dated, the presentation is disorganized, the writing is wordy and there are bizarre advertisements in the back for paraphernalia such as spinning hypnotic disks, phonograph records and cassette tapes, hypnotic crystal balls and "The Powers Hypnotic Eyes," which are "two glass eyes with eyelashes that close as you rotate the mechanism that holds the eyes in place..."

This book likely reflects the state of the art in commercial hypnotism in 1961 when the book was published, and though dated, it is not useless. You can figure out how to put yourself into a trance from the material in the book, and emplace autosuggestions, and hey, it's free!
This book has a special place in my heart because it's one of the books that got me interested in hypnosis and self hypnosis many years ago when books on this subject were scarce and hardly ever available in conventional bookstores.

While some of the material is dated, much of it stands the test of time. If it's basic information about self-hypnosis you want while staying on a budget(e.g. free on and 6.99 for the paperback), this is a great place to start. There is some practical "how to" in it; certainly enough to start experimenting.

Melvin Powers, for those of us old enough to know, put out a LOT of very interesting books and material through his press, Wilshire Book Company. His other books on hypnosis included Advanced Techniques of Hypnosis, and he's one of the few authors who mention the induction of hypnosis through the use of mesmerism (using the energy in one's gaze). It may sound like hooey to some folks, but I predict that one day it'll make a comeback. What's old will become new again--no doubt under a term someone creates to make it more palatable for a modern audience.

Melvin Powers has contributed to the current popularity of hypnosis and self hypnosis books. Of that, there is no doubt in my mind. If you are a collector of hypnosis books (like I am), then A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO SELF HYPNOSIS is a must-have. It's a classic and for that reason, and a few others, I have given it FIVE STARS.
